In memory of

Ricky MacKennon

Ricky passed away aged 58 at the Greenwich and Bexley Hospice in Abbeywood. He died holding his wife Fiona’s hand after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind six children and nine grandchildren who will ensure his legend lives on.

Ricky had three loves in his life the first of which was his work. He worked for the NHS for 38 years. He kept telling his family he was going to retire in the next couple of years but always found a reason to stay. Ricky progressed from a junior in the finance department to Chief Information Officer. He did this with no formal further education, but with pure grit and determination. He cared deeply for the people he worked with at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. He was firm but fair and always went above and beyond. In 2020, when the country stopped to clap for the NHS, Ricky would clap longer and louder than anyone else on the street showcasing the love and passion he had for the NHS.

Ricky’s second love was football so it is very fitting that he left us on a day that England finished top of their group in a major tournament. A lifelong Charlton fan, as a child he would travel the country with his parents watching the Addicks play. Ricky loved playing football even more than watching and played for several different clubs throughout the years. Ricky’s claim to fame was playing against Ian Wright and not conceding a goal. His children can remember being taken in all weathers, freezing on the side of the pitch watching him play. Years later he would take to the side line and was always the loudest and proudest parent.

Ricky’s final and greatest love was his family. He grew up in Downham with his mum, dad and sister, Sharon. He then moved to Plumstead with his wife Fiona to create their very special family of five sons and one daughter. Not all Ricky’s children shared his blood but they were all equal in his eyes. Ricky was their go to man and would never let anybody down.

He will leave a huge hole in everybody’s lives and will be greatly missed.
