In memory of

Florence Adelaide Tharby (Babs)

Florence Adelaide ‘ Babs’ Tharby passed away peacefully on June 25th @ 3.30pm aged 92 years.
Babs leaves a loving legacy which will live on through her daughters and their husbands, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A life well lived and well loved by her and everyone she touched and had the honour to have her in their life.

Born in Eltham London in 1928, Babs moved to Horley with her husband Roy in 1953 where they continued to live for the rest of their lives.
Babs and Roy met in Huntingdon when she was evacuated during WW2 and he was in training to be a Telegraph Engineer. It was love at first sight and they married in July 1947.
Roy sadly died in 2002 , just short of their 55th wedding anniversary.
They opened their hearts and home to extended family, neighbours, friends and anyone who needed help, a touch of kindness or just the sharing of a cup tea , biscuits and a good long chat.
A truly special couple who will be remembered by many with great love and affection.

Members of Horley Methodist Church throughout their lives, they treasured their happy times running the Youth Club for more than 11 years during the late 60’s and 70’s. Children from then now a lot older remain dear friends to both her and the family.
Mum always enjoyed and took great comfort from her church fellowship and never said a goodbye without ‘God Bless’.

During her lifetime Mum travelled the world visiting far flung countries making friends wherever she went. There were also many special trips to Canada & USA to spend time with dear family & friends. The regular visits from our Canadian family here in the UK brought her much joy, nothing she liked more than putting a Canadian flag in the flower pot at the front door before an anticipated visit.

The family are taking great comfort from the many shared happy memories and messages received regarding Mum. It’s lovely to hear the stories and how she meant so much to so many.
We are very privileged to be her daughters and will miss her dreadfully.

The last few months had been difficult for Mum, having fallen and broken her hip at home in March which required surgery and then whilst recovering from this she unfortunately caught Covid-19 in East Surrey Hospital which left her quite weakened. Mum moved to Wykeham house late April for respite care and we were in the process of moving her back into family care when her health took a downward turn and we were unfortunately unable to move her.
We will be forever grateful that we were able to be with her and give her comfort during her last day as she passed away peacefully knowing we were there with her.

Mum always told us she had been very lucky , having had a wonderfully happy long life and told us not to be sad when she was no longer here with us.......
She loved her garden and flowers, the sweet smell of a rose and the sight of a camellia will forever bring her to mind.

There will be a private family funeral and burial on Monday 20th July, conducted jointly by Reverend Felicity Al-Hassan and Reverend Tim Hatwell, Mums godson which would bring her much pride.

As we know many people would in different times have wanted to attend the funeral and share in our service of thanksgiving , we invite you to stand at the roadside and pay your respects should you wish to as she leaves The Meadway at 1.30pm , passing Wykeham House at 1.50pm before arriving at The Methodist Church for her 2pm service.
