Horse-drawn carriages come to town for the Forest Row Village Market this Christmas

Horse And Cart Rides For Christmas

For the fourth year in a row, local funeral home Ballard & Shortall put on horse-drawn carriage rides at the Forest Row Village Market, on Saturday 1 December. The horses even drove Father Christmas to the village primary school.

Visitors enjoyed a host of festive activities, including a Christmas market set up by the Parish Council, a lifesize model of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, children’s rides, local produce stalls and carol singers amongst the mulled wine and mince pies.

Ballard & Shortall is part of the tenth-generation family run funeral directors, CPJ Field. As well as supplying the rides, mince pies and mulled wine at the Market, the company also raised over £100 for chosen charity The Venue on the Green – a youth and community building project.

The Company has been raising money for The Venue on the Green since 2015, helping fund the creation of an outside gym area, an extension to the skatepark and a football pitch. The money raised from this year’s Christmas event will go towards the community project’s main building, for an improved youth club space set to host a café and computers.

Ballard & Shortall is also running its own seasonal fundraiser, through a window display featuring a handmade Christmas tree constructed from pallets and nativity scene in aid of local learning disabilities charity Pericles.

Pippa Yates from Ballard & Shortall, Forest Row, comments: “We’ve been supporting the Market for four years now and our horse-drawn carriage rides have become a tradition. It’s great to see local people enjoy the rides, and even better to help fund health and wellbeing facilities for the whole community.”
