Our Never Alone programme is designed to provide support for loneliness and other emotional and practical needs plus promote general wellbeing. We have recommendations to local groups who may be able to help you. Finding the right one that meets your needs or interests can be very fulfilling and truly boost your mood.

If you have a local group you would like to add to the listing below, please submit your details via the Google form here.

Social

Friendly, welcoming social groups can be relaxed and informal and offer the chance to chat and build new friendships.

We recommend local social groups and clubs for women and men which provide entertainment, conversation and a range of social activities.

Lunch Club

New members are always welcome to this sociable group - an opportunity to enjoy lunch in friendly company at a variety of locations around the Battle area. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at midday at a prearranged venue - usually a local pub. Use the link to email the group leader.

Current Affairs

Members take turns to host the meetings in their homes and are encouraged to bring newspaper cuttings on current issues of national interest, from which a discussion topic is chosen by the group. We enjoy lively discussions with time at the end for socialising. Please use the link for more information.

Battle Ramblers

Battle Ramblers has one simple objective - that of organising Walks in the area of Battle and surroundings, up to about 10/15 miles distance from Battle, to take place on Sunday mornings. The Battle Ramblers Walk Programmes (Sundays and Evenings) are usually issued quarterly: January to March, April to June, July to September, October to December.

Walking Groups 1 & 3 (3-4 & 5-6 miles)

The purpose of these groups is to enjoy the beautiful countryside in this part of Sussex, to take some healthy exercise and indulge in some stimulating conversation in the process.

All our walks take place throughout East Sussex. Short Walks take place monthly throughout the year, on the first Thursday and are around three miles in length. We meet at 10am and have usually completed the walk by 12pm, in time for coffee at a café or pub (optional). Long Walks also take place monthly throughout the year, on the third Tuesday and are approximately five miles in length. We meet at 10.00 am and finish by 1.00 pm in time for lunch at a pub (optional).

East Sussex Health Walks

Free, weekly one-hour walks. They are all completely free and there is no need to book, just pop along shortly before the start time.

Books

If you are interested in meeting fellow bookworms, there are reading groups in most towns for friendly discussions and thought-provoking debates. We can help pinpoint the perfect book group for you in your area.

Book Club 1

We meet in Battle on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 2 pm. Parking is available. Choosing from classic, fiction and non-fiction works, we all read a book each month and discuss it at the following meeting. The choice of books is made by the group and books are provided by the local library, so there is no cost to members.

Book Club 2

This group meets at the Group Leader's house in Battle on the last Thursday of the month. Group members choose a book or two that they would like to read at the beginning of the year (April) and we try to work through the list depending on availability from the Library's reading group list of titles. This means we read a variety of genres and topics reflecting the members' interests and tastes. Some titles take us out of our comfort zone and that is good too. The Group pays £10 per year for this service plus 60p per book collected. We start each meeting with a short presentation from the member who has chosen the current book before going on to a general discussion. It is very informal and friendly whilst trying to keep the grey cells active!

Battle Reading group

3 reading groups, each meeting once a month at Battle library - Battle, TN33 0XB

Battle Library Book Group

Our book group meets every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 11am. New members welcome.

Hobbies

Having a wide choice of groups to pick up an old hobby or start a new one can be a wonderful way to meet new people with a similar interest to you.

We recommend local groups and clubs ranging from chess, bridge, poker, bingo, knitting, to bowls.

Gardening Club

This group meets in the morning of the third Thursday each month. Meetings are rotated to enjoy each other’s gardens at different times of the year, as well as to get advice and catch up with developments. Members knowledge and expertise is shared through gardening tips and tasks to undertake, linked to the time of year. The group shares plant cuttings to enjoy cost effective ways of adding stock to gardens. In addition, we visit gardens, garden centres and other places of interest to horticulturists in the locality and beyond.

Saturday Board Game Club

Saturdays 12 - 2pm - If you love playing board games, come along to Battle Library on a Saturday morning. We have a wide range of classic board games for discerning table top enthusiasts to choose from! For teenagers upwards, all welcome.

Chess

We meet twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Fridays, 10 am to 12 pm, at the Almonry in Battle. We are a friendly, supportive group open to players of all abilities. If you are a complete beginner we can make available a 'teach yourself' programme and give you the opportunity to practice your skills with others at a similar level as well as the chance to learn from more experienced players. We welcome new members - please use the button on the right of this page to email the Group Leader for further information.

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 10am to 12pm at the Emmanuel Centre, Battle for reading and discussion of Shakespeare's plays.

Music & Theatre

Would you like to join an amateur dramatics group or a choir?

Exploring music can be good for the soul. You can join music appreciation classes or join the church choir. Dancing is also a wonderful way to meet new people and have fun.

Singing For Fun

This is an informal, fun group, not a choir, so members do not have to be brilliant singers or able to read music - we welcome anyone who enjoys singing! We usually meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 10 am to 12 pm at Westfield. We usually start the session by singing songs we already know from previous sessions, with a choice from each member, ranging from the Beatles, songs from the shows, Gilbert and Sullivan, classics, folk and world music, with an accompaniment by piano/keyboard. After a break for coffee we usually look at one or two new songs. Copies of words are supplied, there may be a nominal charge if a lot of photocopies are needed. For more details use the link to email the group leader.

Film Group

This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 1.30pm.

Batts

We are passionate about providing a social and creative hub for local residents of Battle and surrounding areas and encouraging the performing arts. Many of our members are ex-professional performers and we are also delighted that many of our previous members have used us to gain experience before either entering the profession or going to drama school. We hope to resume our coffee mornings for anyone interested in finding out more about us, and also our Theatre Club which was set up to enable anyone interested in Theatre to join like-minded people in trips to see productions both in the local area and London; whether as a family, couple or single
