Job Opportunities for the Over 50s

Jobs for the over 50s

The pandemic saw more over 50s than ever before leaving the workforce and not return. However, a recent survey by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) discovered that the majority of workers aged 50 to 65 who left employment during the pandemic are keen to return to the workplace if they could find suitable roles.

As a funeral director, the nature of our work does suit those looking for part-time, flexible and sometimes casual job roles that meet the needs of the over 50s who are currently out of work.

The pandemic forced behavioural changes

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of people who have left the labour market has risen steeply. This has been largely driven by the over 50s leaving the workforce due to early retirement, long-term ill health, and stress. At this current time, unemployment is very low and there are lots of job vacancies. The latest figures show that 57.1% of 50-64 year-olds are now economically inactive. Mike Keoghan, a statistician at the ONS, said there is evidence “the pandemic forced a variety of behavioural changes on people.” According to the ONS's Over 50s Lifestyle Study, 15% of respondents said the COVID-19 pandemic was the main reason for them leaving work, 10% said they wanted a change in lifestyle, and 10% cited mental health and stress.

Favourable and flexible working arrangements would bring the over 50s back to work

Research by the Office of National Statistics (ONS), which formed part of its Over 50s Lifestyle Study polled 43,250 individuals in August 2022 in order to understand the motivations of those aged 50 to 65 years leaving work during the coronavirus pandemic. It set out to determine why they left, whether they intend to return, and what may encourage them back to work. The findings were quite significant and found that three in five (58%) workers aged 50 to 65 years would consider returning to work. The main criteria would be finding a paid job with flexible working hours (32%), good pay (23%), and being able to work from home (12%). Favourable working arrangements would be required when considering jobs for the over 50s.
