In memory of
Margaret Mary Budek
Margaret Mary Budek (née Fossey) was born in London on the 20th of April 1930. She died on the 11th of February 2025, in Bedford Hospital, with her children by her side.
Margaret (known to many as ‘Moggy’) was married to Jurek for 50 years. She leaves 4 children: Kasia, Ania, Peter and Helena, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Passionate and enthusiastic about learning, with degrees in Maths and in Economics, she taught both of these subjects at Pilgrim School in Bedford.
Margaret also loved languages and spent a year as an ‘assistante’ in Lille.
She continued learning throughout her life, and after retirement enjoyed being a member of groups and classes for literature, philosophy, Russian and Latin.
With her husband Jurek, she ran a social group ‘Cosmolink’ from their home. This enabled people new to Bedford, and often new to England, to enjoy an evening of socialising and to make new friends. They shared music and food from their home countries, which led to very interesting and enjoyable evenings.
In 1991, Margaret’s lifelong passion for old books and bookshops found a new expression as she joined her son Peter in establishing The Eagle Bookshop. For many years, she was a familiar and much cherished figure in the shop’s original location in Castle Road, chatting to customers about books, life and the universe as they browsed under her easy direction.
Margaret also enjoyed puzzles, and was very keen on crosswords, especially when completed with family and friends.
She was always interested in people, and always loved catching up with her family and her many friends.
Her funeral will be held at 2pm on the 12th of March 2025, at St Philip and St James church in Bedford.
