Arnold Ullmann,
(23/11/1925 – 19/10/2020).
Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and friend. Arnold had many names, but he was much loved and greatly respected by all who were fortunate enough to meet and know him and he will be greatly missed by both family and friends.
Arnold was born in Berlin, Germany and travelled to England on the Kindertransport arriving in April 1939. He spent his teenage years in Gloucester, serving as a firewatcher in Gloucester Cathedral during the war and working with the Cathedral maintenance team before taking up an apprenticeship with WJB Halls. After a period in the Army serving with the Jewish Brigade and later the Glosters, Arnold returned to Gloucester to complete his apprenticeship and meet his future wife, Bertha.
Arnold and Bertha were married in 1956 and shared more than 58 years of happiness together before Bertha died in 2014. They are survived by daughters Jennifer (Noel) and Angela (Andrew), 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Arnold spent his working career in the civil service working for the Air Ministry then the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works (MPBW) which later became the Property Services Agency (PSA) and he was a member of The Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate for 66 years, serving two terms as their President. Arnold was proud to receive the MBE from the Queen in 1988 for his services to the construction industry.
Arnold’s work took him to many places and the family moved from Warrington, overseas to Malaya, then back to Gloucestershire before settling in Croydon. As retirement approached Arnold and Bertha made one final move to Horley where they lived happily for around thirty years, fully participating in many of the local groups and organisations.
Arnold influenced many people and so many have commented on how nice, kind, polite and generous he was. Arnold, may your legacy live on in your daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
