In memory of
Patrick Joseph Hanrahan
Patrick Joseph Hanrahan, 73, died on 27th May at the Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton, after a long illness.
Born on 21st of March 1951 in the Republic of Ireland, Patrick was known for being an intelligent, knowledgeable and compassionate man. He was always one for giving advice, encouraging you to be ambitious and to always persevere with what you wanted to achieve. He was kind-hearted and generous by nature and family and friends knew he was always at the end of the phone if they should need him.
Patrick had a wicked sense of humour and was always good fun to be around. He loved a good party and could be seen throwing a few moves on the dance floor usually with a vodka in his hand!
Patrick came to England as a young man. He always had a yearning to nurse and happily he fulfilled his ambition. After completing his training in Kidderminster in the early 70s he headed to London where he worked at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital followed by Harley Street. There he nursed big stars like Elizabeth Taylor Joan Collins and Freddie Mercury.
In 1986 Patrick moved to Brighton working first at Heathfield Lodge as a deputy matron but within a year he was given the responsibility of his own nursing home to manage, St John's nursing home in Shoreham. Once in charge Patrick changed the lives of the residents for the better he was always someone who would stand up for what was right and fiercely protective of all who were in his care.
When the nursing home was sold Patrick still continued to dedicate his life caring for others through agency and bank work, for Victoria homes, until the early 2020s when due to his own ill health he reluctantly stepped down. However, Patrick never stopped caring about those around him leaving a massive impact on those who knew him.
Patrick or Pat as he was known will be greatly missed by family and friends and also the nursing staff of ward 9A as Sarah the ward manager can testify.
She said, " Patrick has been missed greatly, we had a toast of cola for him when he passed. We were very fond of him and privileged that he felt comfortable to spend his last days with us on the ward"
The funeral service will be held at Woodvale Crematorium (North) Lewes Road, Brighton at 2 p.m. on Thursday the 27th of June.
Donations in memory of Patrick may be made to Cancer Research UK.
