In memory of

Peter John Christopher Powell

Written by Margaret Powell.

Peter was born at home (17 Connaught Road, Hove) on the l0th February 1946. He was a happy child and had an infectious giggle, and was very ticklish.

Paul, our brother, myself and Peter all played happily together as children.

Our mother played cards and board games and cooked sweets for us. I took the boys to the local Toy Museum to play in the gardens and we spent a lot of time on the beach.

For the first 4 years my father was only home at weekends. He was in the RAF during the war and was in lndia and Burma and on returning to the UK stayed in the RAF until Peter was 4. He then returned to his Commercial Art and painted at home. As a family we went to the local cinemas twice a week. My father painted the boardings outside the cinema depicting the films for the week, so I think we had free tickets.

We all went to Cottesmore St Mary's school in the Upper Drive and I can remember occasions walking home with the boys and playing in the Park on the way. Peter passed his 11-plus with distinction and went to Brighton Grammar School until he was 17. He was in the Naval Cadets at school. He was accepted to join the Naval Academy at Portsmouth but changed his mind when our father died suddenly in 1953 of pancreatic cancer. This was a very distressing time and Peter decided to stay home and go to Brighton Art School instead.

We then moved to another house in Montgomery Street. Our brother Paul left home to travel overseas several months after the death, so there was just the three of us.

Peter met Ele, his wife, 2 years later when he was 19 and she was 17. I remember him bringing her home and introducing her to me. I thought she was a beautiful girl and very cheerful and happy go lucky.

Some time after this they moved to Penge to share a flat with Peter's school friend and fellow art student, Patrick. Peter worked for the famous Banks and Miles consultancy in London and taught art a few evenings a week. He eventually started his own Graphic Design business, PPDesign, and designed for the Post Office and Brighton Council, designing their street signs as well as the international pharmaceutical company Boeringer Mannheim where he developed all of their internal documents and created signage for all their offices all over the world. These were just a few of PPDesign’s clients throughout the years where he was still operating the business up until a few years before his death.

My husband, John, and I moved to Australia. Peter and Ele came to farewell us before we left. I did not see him for four years after this but kept in touch.

Peter and Ele married on 1st September 1971 and bought a house in Preston Park, Brighton.

Peter was a Rokudan Kendo Sensei within the Butokukan Kendo Dojo and he and Ele visited Japan in order to practise this martial art. He continued with Kendo as long as he was able, until a few years ago and enjoyed practising with James, his son, regularly for his life long pursuit of Ki Ken Tai Icchi.

Penny was born on 25th June 1977. James was born on the 2nd November 1980.

We visited England in 1978 and from then on nearly every 4 years when we always met up with Peter and the family.

ln 1993 Peter was informed by a neighbour of our Uncle Alfred, in New York that he was very sick in his flat and Peter flew out and brought him home to Brighton and made sure he was looked after in a Nursing home in Hove. Our Uncle died in November of that year at the age of 84. It is a typical act of Peter’s kindness that he did this for him. He is buried with our father.

Peter and Ele made sure our mother was well looked after and I saw them when I went over for a visit in May 1994. Our mother died in November of that year and Peter organised her funeral.

Since then we have continued to visit Peter and his family and had a few days holiday with them in Menorca and later in Sicily.

Peter and his family came to visit us in Sydney for Christmas 7 years ago.
I am sure Peter loved to be able to visit Sicily with James for the last time a few months ago, shortly after he was diagnosed with his illness.

We are sorry we could not come over for these last few months, but we face timed Peter every week and had good, long conversations with him.

James has been a tower of strength over this very sad time and done a wonderful job of looking after Peter, so he could die in peace at home with his family. He will be greatly missed for his kindness, wicked sense of humour, patience, wisdom and compassion.
