In loving memory of Simon, our friend
I'll always be "Grateful" to have known Simon. A close friend and disability campaigner in the 1990s. We met at the famous protest against Telethon which was dramatised by the BBC. Simon talked in a soothing voice and he had amazing self-confidence. We used to go to gigs, exhibitions, driving around Fulham/London and once or twice had dinner at the Chelsea Arts Club. We went to Mary Duffy's photo exhibition in London, where we met Mat Fraser, and we encouraged Mat in involvement in the disability movement. Simon had high standards as regards disability arts and was against tokenism where people are chosen based on identity, not talent. Simon and the Entitled album were attacked by Melody Maker journalists as having a "crippled imagination", they complained of having to pay tax for disabled people to live, and we as WinVisible were glad to defend him and his anti-charity stance. Sleep well Simon x
A day hasn't gone by when we haven't thought fondly of Simon. My oldest memories are the strongest, chiefly of Simon joining us for tea every week. Always arriving at pace onto our drive on his bike or a bit later in his beloved Saab. Both piloted with skill and abandon in equal measure! Assuming an older brother role to a shy only child and in no small measure being responsible my enduring love of irreverent and corrupting humour. Truly grateful to have known him. x
❤️
There aren't enough words to describe Simon.
But Simon always had plenty of words
RIP Simon.x
Never to be forgotten. Memories from schooldays, inspired me to contact Simon in about 2022. We corresponded for a while about all sorts of things. He was an impressive man - in what he'd made of his life (which struck me as rich beyond measure) and in his intelligence and dry sense of humour. I liked it particularly that he wasn't one 'to be taken in'. He thought for himself. How's it going up there, Simon?
