I always appreciated his kindness and support during my time at PGS.
A great teacher, taught me between 1965 and 1970.
A great teacher, and a great man. Thoughts with all who knew him. Steve Jacobs ("Hatty" PGS 1967-74)
John Wheway was my form teacher in my GCE years in the early ‘60s and was instrumental in inspiring me to become a geography teacher for 30+ years. So I have always fondly remembered him. Met him a few times at reunion dinners in Poole Grammar School Old Grammarians. One of my neighbours in Felton Road knew him too and gave me news from time to time before and after he moved to Milton Keynes. I send my warm and sincere condolences to his loved ones on this sad occasion and I pray that you will be comforted by so many treasured memories of John.
I was greatly saddened to hear of John's death. He was a lovely, lovely man, greatly admired by all his colleagues, gentle, wise and devoted to his profession. He always had time for young colleagues and his advice was unerringly perceptive. It was John who appointed me in 1975. I briefly saw Nigel Gilpin before he dashed off to a secondary heads’ meeting. I had another interview scheduled for that afternoon in Abingdon, but John put a little pressure on me to accept the offer there and then. Of course I did and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I shall always remember him with great fondness.
As I remember along with Uncle Ron, something of an institution at PGS making the place run smoothly. Never a man of many words, just a telling phase or withering look. Bullies & swats alike respected him, so he must have done most things right! Condolences to his family.
John was a wonderful man to have known - especially as a master at Poole Grammar School. He was such a gracious and caring person and always had time for everyone. He will be sadly missed at our Old Grammarian Reunion Dinners where he was always welcomed.
My thoughts are with the family at this time

Rest easy, dear colleague, one of the world's finest professionals. You've earned it.
A great teacher and a great person. From a pupil at PGS from 1972 to 74. The grainy photo is from the Geography Field trip to Bala in I think 1973. Mr Wheway is standing at the back under the YHA sign. Mr Britton is to his left and I am on his right. My condolences to his family.
