About Us

Ballard & Shortall | Funeral Directors Sussex

Paul_Shortall_1
Messrs Tommy Bartley and John Ward founded Bartley & Ward in
1899. They took over a building firm run by the Gates family since 1855, and by the early 1900's plumbing, house decorating and funeral work were also carrid out. They operated from premises at Cross Keys and Three Bridges Road. Hall, Beddel & Co. took over the business in 1930 providing joinery contracts in London and in 1957 the business moved to 58 Haslett Avenue West.

In 1969 the business once more changed hands, resulting in the closure of all but the funeral business. Once more, Bartley & Ward became family owned and moved to its current site at 10 Haslett Avenue West, Crawley, a former school and tea house.

Re-named in 1994, Ballard & Shortall, incorporates the long established and respected businesses of Bartley & Ward (Crawley), F Brinkhurst & Son (East Grinstead), Brinkhurst & Reynolds (Lingfield), Brinkhurst & Jackson (Forest Row) and King & Hooper (Horley).

Thousands of families have been placing their trust in us to help them at their times of loss since our beginnings 115 years ago.  This makes Ballard and Shortall one of West Sussex and Surrey’s oldest established funeral directors. Today, we have contemporary and comfortable premises in Crawley, East Grinstead, Horsham, Forest Row and Horley.

We have a long heritage of providing the highest standards of professional, caring and personal service when people need us most.  Under the expert and experienced direction of Principal Funeral Director Paul Shortall and Funeral Directors Clare Shortall and David Holmden, our commitment continues unwaveringly to this very day.  We are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
